Why do some airstyler attachments break and others don't?

Airstyler attachments mostly break in two places: the coating on the barrel itself, and the plastic click or locking mechanism you use to attach it. A thin spray coating can loosen or flake off after repeated heating and cooling, and cheap plastic in the click fitting becomes brittle over time from the constant temperature changes. A fully ceramic-coated attachment with a sturdy fitting mechanism generally lasts longer than one with a thin coating.

Why does the coating on some curl barrels break faster?

Many cheaper attachments have a thin ceramic or ionic spray coating over a core of plain metal or plastic. That layer is meant to spread heat more evenly, but it's literally a thin top layer: with daily use, cleaning, and repeated heating and cooling, that layer can flake off or come loose over time.

An attachment that's fully ceramic-coated, instead of coated with a thin spray layer, doesn't have that vulnerable top layer. That doesn't mean an attachment like this is indestructible, but it does mean there's no thin layer that can flake off separately from the rest of the material.

Why do click mechanisms and locks break?

The point where an attachment clicks onto the handle is often made of plastic, simply because plastic is easier to mold into a precise shape than metal. That plastic sits close to the heat source and heats up and cools down with every use, which is called a thermal cycle.

Repeated cycles create small amounts of stress in the material, which makes plastic more brittle over time and more likely to crack, especially at the thinnest points of a click mechanism. Forcibly pulling an attachment off while it's still hot increases that chance even further.

What can you do yourself to make attachments last longer?

  1. Let the device and attachment cool down first before unclicking it, instead of right after use.
  2. Don't force it when clicking an attachment on or off, it should fall into place without any twisting.
  3. Use your airstyler on towel-dried hair, not dripping wet hair, that prevents unnecessary overheating.
  4. Clean attachments regularly to remove product buildup, accumulated residue can put extra strain on the coating.
  5. Store attachments without pressure or weight from other items on top of them, that prevents hairline cracks in the material.
