How to get the perfect blowout

With English subtitles

Hair By Gaby shows how to use the curling attachment to create a blowout that lasts.

6 steps to the perfect blowout

Follow these 6 steps for a blowout that lasts.

1
Model with long, healthy wavy hair

Start with slightly damp hair

Towel-dry your hair briefly. It should be damp, not wet: that's when the curl holds best and lasts longest.

2
Volumizing pre-styling spray and mousse

Protect your hair before you start

Apply a heat protector all over and add styling mousse for volume and hold. Both go on before you blow-dry, not after. See our recommended hair products here.

3

Pre-dry and section your hair

Blow-dry until your hair is almost dry, with only the ends still slightly damp. Then clip it up in sections of 2 to 3 centimetres and start at the bottom.

Curl section by section

Let the ends hang loose and let the airflow pull your hair around the attachment. Heat until the section is dry (30 to 40 seconds), then cool it down on the cold setting (30 to 40 seconds).

5

Finish and lock it in

Turn the styler off before you slide the attachment out, and pull it straight down. Let your hair cool down completely before you run your fingers through it, and finish with a light hairspray if you like.

Not quite working yet?

Usually it's one of these:

  • Hair too wet or too dry while styling
  • Sections too big, airflow can't get a grip
  • Curl released while it was still warm
  • Practice: you'll pick up the technique after a few tries

Always use good products: shampoo, conditioner, heat protector and volume mousse. Start on towel-dry hair, not dripping wet and not fully dry. Work in small sections with hair clips and let the curls cool down completely with the coolshot function to set them. Optional: finish with a light hairspray for extra hold.

Does your blowout fall flat after a few hours? This is usually caused by hair that's too wet or too dry when styling, skipping the coolshot, too little volume mousse, or not holding the curl warm for long enough (at least 30 seconds).

Blow-dry nozzle: for fast drying and straight hair, aim the airflow section by section at your hair. Ideal for getting your hair 70% dry before you start styling.

Ceramic curl attachments (L and R): for curls and waves. Hold a section of max 3 cm for 30 to 40 seconds, the airflow wraps your hair around the attachment automatically. Alternate both directions for a natural result and set with coolshot.

Thermal brush: for a voluminous blowout. Brush from root to tip and finish with coolshot.

Flat blow-dry brush: for sleek, straight hair in one smooth motion from root to tip.

Diffuser: for natural curls without frizz.

Essential: a heat protector, volume mousse for body and hold, and a good shampoo and conditioner for healthy hair. Optional but recommended: a texturizing spray for extra grip and a finishing spray for long-lasting hold.

A heat protector shields your hair from heat damage and gives you a better styling result, spray it onto towel-dry hair before use.

Sleek and straight: flat blow-dry brush. Volume: thermal brush. Curls and waves: ceramic curl attachments. Natural curls: diffuser. Fast drying: blow-dry nozzle.

Always start with the blow-dry nozzle to get your hair about 70% dry, then switch to your preferred styling attachment for the best result.

Almost nobody gets the perfect curl on the first try. Count on 3 to 5 practice runs before it clicks, that's a normal learning curve, not a sign that something's wrong with your airstyler.

The most common beginner mistakes: taking sections that are too thick (keep them small, max 3 cm), holding the curl attachment for too short a time (at least 30 to 40 seconds warm and cool), or styling on hair that's too wet or too dry (towel-dry is the sweet spot).
