Why your curl holds all day, explained

The material: fully sintered ceramic

Most styling tools with a so-called “ceramic coating” have a thin layer of ceramic sprayed over a metal core. The curl barrel of the Airstyler Pro Ceramiq™ is built differently: a fully sintered ceramic layer, rather than a sprayed layer. Sintering means ceramic powder is fused together under high heat into a dense, homogeneous mass, rather than sprayed onto the surface as a thin layer.

That difference lies in thickness and consistency. A fully sintered layer is more homogeneous across the whole surface, which contributes to more even heat distribution with fewer local hotspots than a thin sprayed layer.

Why this is noticeable

Fewer hotspots means fewer spots where hair overheats locally while the rest of the strand hasn't reached temperature yet. In practice, that feels like a more even result: fewer kinks, fewer surprises with fine or porous hair.

Heat, moisture and hydrogen bonds

Hair is mostly made of the protein keratin, whose chains are held together by hydrogen bonds: relatively weak links that decide what shape your hair takes.1 Heat and moisture loosen those bonds for a moment, making your hair temporarily bendable. Does it cool in its new shape? Then the hydrogen bonds re-form and hold the curl, until moisture, rain, sweat, or just washing resets everything again.1

So that's a temporary, physical change. Not a chemical one. A perm does something completely different: it breaks the much stronger sulfur bonds (disulfide bonds), a totally different process.1

Here's where it gets interesting: temperature makes all the difference. With dry hair and direct contact, like a straightener, cuticle damage already starts at around 150°C. From about 230°C, the protein structure is damaged beyond repair.2 The Airstyler Pro Ceramiq™ works differently: with airflow, not a hot plate, at 35°C, 70°C or 110°C. Moisture basically acts like a lubricant for those hydrogen bonds. Damp hair needs less heat to change shape than hair that's completely dry.3 That's why the advice is: start with slightly damp hair. Airflow, controlled heat, and wrapping it around the ceramic curl barrel then give your curl all the time it needs to set, while the hair dries gently.

Air versus a hot plate

A straightener transfers heat conductively: a hot metal plate presses straight against your hair, and all that energy lands on one small spot. An airstyler works convectively, through moving air, which by definition spreads less energy onto any single concentrated point.2 That's exactly why styling with airflow is generally gentler than direct contact at high temperature.

Validation in three steps

Before a curl barrel is approved, it goes through three types of testing: temperature, material, and simply real-world use.

Temperature testing

Every curl barrel is tested for temperature stability. Does the 35°C, 70°C or 110°C setting really stay within a tight margin, even after countless rounds of heating and cooling? That's handled by a PTC heating element (positive temperature coefficient): the warmer it gets, the higher the resistance, the less current gets through. A smart, self-regulating trick that keeps overheating at bay.*

Material testing

The fully sintered ceramic layer is tested for wear resistance: how scratch-resistant is it, how well does it bond to the layer underneath, and how does it hold up over countless heating and cooling cycles? That's exactly why our care instructions tell you to skip the scouring pads. The coating is tougher than a sprayed layer, but it's not indestructible against abrasives.

Real-world testing

Alongside lab tests, we have the product tested by real hairdressers and a group of customers, at home, under normal everyday conditions. Because a lab can predict a lot, but not how your hair behaves on a busy Monday morning. That mix of hard lab data and real-world experience decides whether a curl barrel makes the cut. The Motion Test: durability under repeated use

A curl barrel that performs perfectly once? Not hard. A curl barrel that still gives off even heat after hundreds of styling sessions? Now that's the real challenge. That's why every design goes through an internal endurance test we call the Motion Test: thousands of heating and cooling cycles across the three temperature settings, combined with continuous rotation of the brushless BLDC motor at its full speed of around 110,000 rpm.*

That quiet BLDC motor (Brushless DC) has no carbon brushes that can wear down from mechanical contact, unlike older motor types. The result: fewer parts that wear out, less noise, and a steadier speed. Which in turn means smoother airflow while you style.

Safety and quality control

Electrical safety

Every Airstyler Pro Ceramiq™ goes through electrical safety checks before it leaves the factory. Think tests for insulation, grounding, and overheat protection, at a power rating of 1300W.

Quality control per batch

Beyond product-level tests, we also pull a sample from every production batch, because a later batch has to be just as good as the very first one. We check those for temperature accuracy and the finish of the ceramic layer, before a batch is cleared for sale.
